We can say wihtout doubt that GIMP does the same and more than the majority of photograph design and retouching programs that you pay for. And of course it`s totally free.It will become justifiably compared with the excellent Photoshop and what they say about its qualities.It has multi-layer support, it has almost unlimited do/undo, the possibility to open multiple images simultaneously. You can redimension images, rotate them, invert colours, it has mirror function, geometric funcitons (circles, squares...), gradient editor, in addition to supporting multiple formats: JPG, GIF, PNG, TIF, BMP, PCX...All this using its own tools descended from Linux, and with more than 100 plug-ins. Really essential for whichever graphic designer values it.
