This describes the sysv_ipc module which gives Python access to System V inter-process semaphores, shared memory and message queues on most (all?) *nix flavors. Examples include OS X 10.5 & 10.6, Ubuntu 8 & 9, OpenSolaris 2008.11, FreeBSD 6, 7 and 8, and AIX 5.2. It might also work under Windows with a library like Cygwin.
