Most electrical engineers that work with digital circuits know that a logic analyzer is an invaluable tool to any digital systems developement. Since I don't own a logic analyzer and a decent USB one costs over $200 (way beyond the pocket money of a typical college student), I decided to design a logic analyzer of my own that is cheap and decent. My current developement platform is the PIC18F4550 which is capable of handling the USB protocol at full-speed. The design goals for this project is an 8-bit channel logic analyzer that is capable of sampling rates up to 1 MHz. To simplify development, the USB HID protocol will be used. In addition, the device should be able to double as a digital function generator. Since the maximum effective instruction execution rate of the PIC is 12 MHz, a 1 MHz sample rate is a reasonable goal. The project is to be complete with both the hardware and the software that interacts with the device. Source: To be made open Status: In developement Download: None yet
