Maternal Mortality - Monte Carlo Simulator 1.0

The model functions as a microsimulation (Monte Carlo) model with a monthly cycle, in which individual women are simulated and their histories remembered (and used to affect future probabilities in the model). Several variables in the model also rely on discrete event simulation, which allows for more realistic timing of events (i.e. miscarriage/abortion/delivery by gestational age, age of sexual debut & menopause, etc.). An explicit spatial dimension is also incorporated into the model with the integration of a Geographic Information System (GIS) (CarteWheel), allowing women to be simulated at a particular location according to the population density of the area in question. Each woman also has individual attributes that are simulated based on the characteristics of her location. Thus the model can create quite heterogeneous women that more closely resemble a given population in terms of geographic distribution and individual characteristics such as level of education, anemia, desired number of children, contraceptive preferences, etc.
