Commons Release Updater 6.x-2.3

This module serves only to function as a method to handle update notifications for the Commons distribution (/install profile). It has no other functional purpose or code.Why does this exist? Well, it's a teeny hack. But Commons - as a distribution - needs to provide a way to notify site owners of a new release. There are two factors that influence how update notifications can be delivered: Module dependency dictates per-distro update notification. The "latest" version of any given module included with Commons might not be one you should use with a given release of Commons; there may be various compatibility issues, etc. So Commons must take over notification of updates for most (nearly all) modules under a single notification, so you always get a release with a set of modules that are known to work together. The distribution needs a way to provide a unified, single notification for a new release of the distribution. The drupal.org commons project is not the place to provide that single notification. There are two reasons for this, all stemming from the fact that there is (and won't be soon) a single "module" download available for the Commons distribution: drupal.org cannot currently (as of early 2011) build build the Commons distribution (because an external GPL library is included (ckeditor)). Until this changes, the actual download of Commons is hosted off of Drupal.org (at acquia.com). Thus, there's no release at the d.o Commons project to check for updates. The Commons Core Feature is insufficient on its own, and shouldn't be available for download on its own from the project page. While Commons includes a Feature called "Commons Core," this is only one of many Features in Commons. If the (exported Feature as a) module were available at the /commons project, it could mislead people into downloading (only) the Core Feature, which - when installed on a generic Drupal site - would not work on its own (without having had the install profile run, and have other required features present.) Therefore, it's unadvisable to use the Commons Core (exported module as) Feature to control update notifications.Therefore, the commons_release module is a standalone module included in Commons that it uses to check against at d.o for a new release, and report appropriately to users.Note that the use of this module will begin proper notifications from release 1.2 onward. (It will not advise of the 1.1 > 1.2 update.)You should NOT download this module directly from here; appropriate versions are bundled with the appropriate release of Commons.
