At these days nearly every computer offers multiple cpu cores. On cpu extensive operations it makes a lot of sense use to the power of some or all available cpu's. To know the number of available cpu's (hyper-threaded, logical and physical) will enable developers to open a correct / selective the number of threads which makes applications running smooth on the underlying hardware.
