"Relative pitch" is the ability to recognize and name an interval (the distance between two musical notes) simply by hearing it. Unlike perfect pitch, which many claim cannot by acquired through training or practice, most people can attain a reasonably well-developed sense of relative pitch through practice and repeated drills.<br /><br />RPitch (pronounced "are pitch") is a feature-rich software program designed to help a user develop a sense of relative pitch. With it, a user can practice identifying random intervals while tracking the number of correct identifications.<br /><br />RPitch runs on Windows, Mac OSX, Linux and Unix computers. To download and install RPitch, follow these steps:<br /><br /> 1. If you don't already have it, you need to get the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), which can be downloaded free from Sun Microsystems here. When you install the JRE, choose to install the "Additional Font and Media Support" option.<br /> 2. After you have installed the JRE, download the file rpitch-0.9-beta-installer.jar from this page. This is an installation program that will intall RPitch on your computer. To launch it on a Windows computer, simply double-click the file's icon. On other computers, you will need to execute the command "java -jar rpitch-0.9-beta-installer.jar" from a command (shell) prompt.<br /> 3. Follow the instructions given by the installation program to intall RPitch. To start the program on a Windows computer, click its shortcut icon. To start RPitch on other computers, run the shell script rpitch.sh that will be in the directory where you installed RPitch.
