envstore is a simple tool that allows you to save environment variables into a separate store, list them and reload them into the shell again.<br /><br />Usage:<br /><br />envstore - save and restore environment variables<br /><br /> envstore COMMAND [ARG]<br /><br />Commands:<br /><br /> show List saved variables in human-readable format<br /> eval Generate shell code to set the variables<br /> save Save a variable<br /> rm Delete a variable<br /> clear Clear out the stored variable<br /><br />History<br /><br />When I started using CAAP, I added the current track to my window manager's status bar. Obviously, CAAP would need to the MPD_HOST variable set from somewhere. You can't really interfere with the environment of a running application, except if the application itself allows for it.<br /><br />So instead of hacking environment stuff into XMonad, I created something more generic: envstore. It allows you to save exported environment variables and load them again:<br /><br />Example use<br /><br />$ envstore save FOO<br />FOO does not exist in environment<br />$ export FOO=bar<br />$ envstore save FOO<br /><br />(in another shell:)<br /><br />$ envstore show<br />FOO bar<br />1 entries<br />$ envstore eval -e<br />export FOO=bar<br />$ eval $(envstore eval -e)<br /><br />FOO now exists in the environment.<br /><br />I have envstore started from my zshrc, so if I set MPD_HOST, I will have it in every new shell and can easily use mpc.
