Perl ECS is an implementation of the EMDIS Communication System (ECS), written in Perl. The original ECS specifications were developed as part of the European Marrow Donor Information System (EMDIS). As described in the ECS specification document, "The purpose of ECS is to provide a permanent, reliable, connection-oriented communication service for the automatic exchange of messages between computer applications." This communication service makes heavy use of encrypted email messages.
