An empirically derived routine for bringing out the thread detail in canvases. An example x-ray image (histogram equalized raw.tif) illustrates the problem of manually counting canvas threads for painting forensics. Paint, cracks, and shadows make it difficult to easily discern the cross-hatched weaving of the canvas threads. The min & max functions could be recast as morphological operations, erode & dilate
