SQL Data Dictionary - Basic Edition was developed because I needed a way to maintain metadata on SQL Server databases. Rather than maintaining a separate document detailing descriptions of database objects, I decided to take advantage of SQL Server 2000 extended properties and write an app that would store this information in the database itself. Since I've benefited in the past by downloading free utilities - I decided to share SQL Data Dictionary - Basic Edition with other developers.

By using this utility, it makes it easier for DBA's/SQL Developers to share Database metadata information with the appropriate personnel in their organizations (i.e. Business Analysts, Auditors, etc.)

Subsequent to that I decided to add a number of additional features - the big one being the ability to customize report layout and contents - even changing the report output so that labels on the SQL Data Dictionary reports appear in different languages - this section is fully-customizable. The new version - SQL Data Dictionary - Standard Edition - is available for a free 30-day trial period - after which a small fee must be paid to register the software if it meets your needs.
